Buddhist 12 Step Group (B12) In Person and  Zoom
Saturday

7:00-8:30pm

Cost: Free; donations are welcome

The Buddhist 12  Step Study Group (B12) explores how Buddhism and 12 Step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous ( NA, etc), can benefit and nurture each other. Both practices begin with the acknowledgement of suffering, the realization that suffering arises from craving, and that there is a solution. The path of the 12 Steps and the Noble Eightfold Path travel through remarkably similar territory and have much to offer each other.

We meet  every Saturday from  7:00-8:30 pm. Following a brief welcoming discussion and introduction period, there is a 20 minute guided meditation followed by reading and discussing books that connect Buddhism and the 12 Steps.  We close with a lovingkindness practice.

No dues or fees; no need to pre-register.

No meditation experience or particular faith or spiritual practice is required. Neither is membership in a twelve step program. We are simply people exploring the path out of the suffering brought about by craving and clinging in whatever form it arises.

CLASSES

Buddhist Insight Meditation

Join us in an exploration of the Buddha’s teaching on “the four faces of love”—kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity.
Thursday, January 11 - February 1, 6:30-8:00 pm $79 / Four Classes
Instructor: Candace Strange
Location: Buddhist Dharma Center of Cincinnati

Learning to meditate, we have access to a clarity and contentment rarely available when our minds are busy and distracted. We will explore the techniques which have been at the heart of the Buddhist tradition for 2500 years: awareness, concentration, insight, and mindfulness. If you are learning how to meditate for the first time, you will find a firm foundation here. If you are a seasoned meditator who wants to review the basics, welcome back. We will provide chairs and meditation cushions. No particular belief system is required - just a desire to find the clarity and peace that meditation can bring.

ANATTĀ MEDITATION COURSE

EIGHT-MONTH PROGRAM FOR PRACTITIONERS OF THE DHARMA – OCTOBER 2023 TO MAY 2024

This program requests a commitment of daily practice and attendance at monthly gatherings.  There will be assignments to do between sessions, suggested reading, writing, and contemplations. You will receive periodic emails with reminders and encouragement.  Spreading out the teachings over 8 months will help them stick more than a basic 4-6 week course.

The Buddha taught the three characteristics of all conditioned phenomena – anicca (impermanence), dukkha (unsatisfactoriness, stress, or suffering), and anattā (not-self).  Anattā is considered the heart of the Buddha’s teachings, and is the most difficult to realize.

For those already familiar with the basic teachings, who wish to continue, and deepen in their practice, this course is offered.  This course will focus on the teachings of anattā or not-self and will include other teachings of the Buddha.  There will be guided and unguided meditations each class day.  We will share lunch together as a way of forming community.

First Saturday of the Month: October 7, November 4, December 2, January 6, February 3, March 2, April 6, and May 4

Requirements: Must have been in one of Joan’s previous courses or have a fair understanding of the basic teachings of the Buddha.

In Person and on Zoom: For those local, come and join in person.  For those further away, join via Zoom.  For those local, if you feel at all unwell, please join via Zoom.

Time:        10 AM – 3 PM

Location: Buddhist Dharma Center of Cincinnati, on Moline Ct. off Hamilton Ave. in Northside.
Or on Zoom – link sent closer to class.

Lunch:      Students provide the group vegetarian lunch.  You will be asked to sign up at least once to bring a soup, salad, bread or desert.

Cost:         There is no charge for these classes, rather you are invited to express your gratitude with a freely offered donation to Joan.  There will be a basket where you may donate at each session, or information on how to donate via PayPal, Zelle, or Venmo.

Please do not apply if you are not really committed to attending each monthly session and doing the contemplations during the month.  Sometimes something can come up where you might miss a month, but please consider this a rarity.  Do your best to come every month.  Click this link to Apply for this Course.
